In Hindu mythologies and epics, marriages have been given an important place. There are different forms of marriage, however, over time two forms have gained popularity in terms of its name. In Gandharva marriage a man and a woman can simply marry with deities as the witness; this is generally the case when they marry without the consent of their families. Such a marriage is not legally recognized. The Vedic form of marriage includes chanting of mantras and where the community is invited to attend the wedding.
Marriage is a unique bond in which two families get wedded socially first followed by the bride and the bridegroom. Indian wedding is a very long process in which every character, from a priest to a florist, plays an important role in making this function memorable.
In India, marriages have become a gala celebration now. People are opting for heritage weddings or local theme weddings and spending a fortune to make their weddings an out of the world event. Culturally too for those who can afford it, weddings are a display of extravagance and lavish culture that is talked about over decades and centuries. |
