Golfing in India has been introduced by the British as early as 1829 by establishing the Royal Calcutta Golf Club in Kolkata primarily for the recreation of the officers of the erstwhile East India Company. The Royal Calcutta Golf Club is also said to be one of the oldest golf club in the world outside Britain. In India, this was followed by the establishment of the Bombay Presidency golf club and the Delhi Golf Club in 1931.
